Allison Brown & "Uncle Dan" Henshall
Genre: Bluegrass, Songwriter
Allison Brown’s sweet, powerful singing offers a captivating invitation to follow her down lonesome railroad lines, into abandoned buildings, back in time, to high above the stratosphere as she illustrates landscapes both strange and familiar with her newest collection of songs. Allison’s voice is experiencing an intense new elasticity as her instrument’s distinct tune and tone evolve with over twenty years of performance experience.
With raw honesty, playful humor and a pinch of bitterness, Allison explores leaps of faith, toils of the road, bad luck, bad weather, heroes, villains and longing for love and meaning with her crafted originals alongside classic roots repertoire including roots, country, gospel, blues and bluegrass. Allison’s subtle guitar work is highlighted by her musical partner in crime ‘Uncle’ Dan Henshall; expertly tearing through mandolin accents and solos forming a foundation for their collective hatful of songs and stories. As a team, they create an unmistakable spark as they bring their truest personalities to the stage in a refreshing conversation with the audience. Allison & Dan are excited to be performing across Manitoba this fall for House Concerts as part of the Home Routes circuit, and to touring across Ontario and Canada’s East Coast. Allison’s eagerly anticipated third full-length release, recorded at Andy Magoffin’s House of
Miracles studio will be hot off the presses this summer. Among Allison & ‘Uncle’ Dan’s recent adventures, they performed together at 2014’s Home County Festival as mainstage acts along with Vera Colley on accordion and Jedd House on upright bass. They also performed together at the inaugural Pelee Island Unplugged and Kingsville Folk Festival in Southwestern Ontario. Some highlights of Allison’s solo adventures this past year included a performance at Hugh’s Room as part of Michael Wrycraft’s “Two Sides Of Carole King” tribute concert, and performances in Victoria B.C. “Uncle” Dan is also a strong folk songwriter in his own right, and leads the Thames River Valley Boys; hailed by the London Free Press’ James Reaney as one of London’s “top bluegrass outfits”. Allison & Dan traversed the continent in summer of 2013 heading west on VIA Rail’s On-Board Entertainment program for a twelve show tour of Vancouver Island. They’ve also performed together at Live From The Rock and Trout Forest Music festivals on their 2011 tour of Northern Ontario and Manitoba. They’ve been performing together for over five years at a myriad of house concerts, shady taverns, sidewalks, haywagons, nightclubs, theatres, churches, libraries and more across Ontario and beyond. A Southern Ontario songbird with a big voice, Allison offers a clear channel for other Canadian independent musicians operating below the mainstream radar. Allison is the Program Director at CHRW Radio 94.9fm at London’s Western University; she hosts her own program “Southern Ontario Comfort” Wednesday evenings at 6pm. Allison also works as a publicist and promoter for other folk roots artists with her business “Brown Paper Publicity”.
