Daniel Péloquin-Hopfner

& James Culleton

Daniel Péloquin-Hopfner—a multi-disciplinary performing artist from Sainte-Rose-du-Lac, Manitoba, now based in Winnipeg—has spent over a decade touring the world with the folk-pop trio Red Moon Road and honing his skill by delving into his cultural heritage. Gifted with a commanding voice and a mystery of eclectic musical instruments, Péloquin-Hopfner attributes his artistic sensibilities to being raised in the western plains. His attunement to the natural world is reflected in his captivating musical landscapes, inviting listeners to explore his world of enchanting lyrics and melodies, where curiosity fuels artistry.

A natural collaborator, Daniel Péloquin-Hopfner’s talents have manifested in projects like Fire & Smoke (with Claire Morrison), Empreintes (a Canadian/French/African theatre collaboration), Zrada (Ukrainian folk-rock from Winnipeg), Mountainseed (a ‘philosorock’ trio), and this most recent collaboration with multimedia artist James Culleton.

James Culleton is a Winnipeg-based songwriter and storyteller who weaves together art, and history, along with his English and French roots throughout his multimedia-based work, combining visual art, puppets and props.

As a visual artist, Culleton can often be seen sketching his fellow musicians, his sculptures of musical instruments can be seen on the facade of the West End Cultural Centre, and he has published books like, “Lyrical Lines,” which showcases a  visual who’s who of local musicians in some of Winnipeg’s most venerable venues.

Show Description

Multi-instrumentalist troubadour Daniel Péloquin-Hopfner and visual artist songwriter James Culleton join forces in this Home Routes ‘Crankie” tour offering up a mix of roots and rhythm, with stories told under the backdrop of handmade Crankies. Join them for a night of art and music with a franco-anglophone twist (of the moustache)!
A Crankie is a moving panorama, an old storytelling art form that was popular in the 18th century. Scrolled art is mounted on hand-cranked spindles held together in a frame. As music plays or a story is told, an artist cranks the spindles so that the picture moves with the story, creating a uniquely magical experience for the audience.
