Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous is a grass roots folk music organization dedicated to directly supporting artists by creating new concert and music workshop opportunities centered in rural and remote communities. Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous is equally dedicated to supporting those communities that are under-served musically. What works for the artist works well for the community. By the end of this 2016-2017 season, our tenth year of operation, we will have planned and produced slightly more than 7,200 individual concerts in people’s living rooms and small halls across Canada.
Since our beginning we have had significant financial support from the Canada Council and the Province of Manitoba, joined a few years later by FACTOR. The Manitoba Arts Council and Manitoba Music have also been steady in their support. We also have corporate support from Big Rock Breweries who over the last two decades has rigorously supported folk music events across Canada. The artists who tour also contribute to running the organization. Together this provides enough to pay the rent, to pay our modest equal wages, pay to cover the mailing, the web site and the long distance phone bill. It’s just enough to barely operate at our present size. It doesn’t allow for growth because of lack of human resources. We haven’t yet even begun to explore Canada for potential concert locations. In the folk world alone, with a few more resources, we could double the number of artists getting work from this program each season. We could double the number of communities benefiting. This touring model would also work beyond folk music, to include jazz and classical music, and literary programs. The cultural opportunities for community supported touring are endless. We now have the experience to deliver these ideas. Help us build a functional and fair infrastructure for everybody.
Although we have not yet been granted Charitable Status and cannot forward a receipt for tax purposes, we will send you music, our good wishes, acknowledgement on our website, and you will enjoy the satisfaction of contributing to important cultural work in Canada. No matter the amount, your support matters. If you love folk music, the scene, the shows, the pickers, the songs in your head, the lonesome harmonica blowers, the cultural life of your country, help us grow.
